Autonomous agents pay per request with HTTP 402 challenges on Base. Teams and developers who need volume pricing or invoiced billing work with sales directly. No real settlement has been verified to date.

Rail 1: Machine-to-Machine AI Agents

x402 Autonomous Micropayments

  1. Request: Agent makes POST request to service endpoint.
  2. 402 Challenge: Server returns 402 Payment Required with challenge headers:
    WWW-Authenticate: x402 token="inv_...", price="0.0050", network="base", receiver="0xb6e2..."
  3. Payment: Agent signs or fulfills micropayment on Base.
  4. Execution: Agent retries request with header:
    X-402-Payment-Proof: <payment_proof>
Agents can read /.well-known/mcp.json to auto-configure MCP tool clients.
